At Chaplin Dental, we use dental crowns and dental bridges to restore damaged teeth, or replace missing teeth. The use of these restorative techniques helps us improve the strength, appearance and functionality of your teeth. Dental crowns and bridges are both strong, durable and natural-looking restorations that get color matched with your natural teeth, so that they’re indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth. Patients in Toronto that require dental crowns or bridges should turn to the expertise of the Chaplin Dental team, who are considered experts in their field, and have years of experience that will ensure you feel taken care of from start to end.
A Dental Crown is an artificial tooth cap that gets fitted onto your natural tooth root, or in case of a missing tooth, can be placed onto an artificial root, known as a Dental Implant. If your natural tooth is damaged by too much decay, our experienced Toronto dentists will most likely recommend a dental crown as one of the restorative solutions. They will discuss the procedure with you in details and explain its long-lasting benefits.
To ensure a proper fitting and strong crown, some of the tooth may need to be shaved down. A skilled dentist will know the exact amount to take off, although it’s typically around 2mm.
If the tooth was very decayed or broken, it may be too small for a crown once it’s been properly shaved down. This means that the tooth must be built up again with filling material to make sure the crown will fit correctly.
After the tooth is cleaned and dried, the gum tissue around it is pushed back so that a series of liquid materials can be dabbed around. Following this, a tray is placed into the mouth that the patient must bite down on for a couple of minutes. A chemical reaction occurs and the liquids create a putty that gives an exact impression of the tooth and jawline.
A temporary crown is created until the permanent one can be inserted. The temporary is placed with a cement that can be easily taken out, but will ensure that the tooth is protected.
Once the permanent crown is finished, the patient’s temporary crown will be removed and the tooth cleaned. After the permanent crown is inserted, the patient much clench down their jaw to ensure that the bond is secure. It’s important at this stage that the patient notifies the dentist if the crown feels too big, or it doesn’t match up with their natural jawline and bite.
There should not be too much lingering pain or trauma to the tooth or surrounding areas in the patient’s mouth. It is recommended to stay away from biting down on hard foods, or chewing on anything sticky for a couple of days. Some sensitivity to hot and cold may be experienced as well but should subside.
A Dental Bridge is a set of three or more dental crowns stuck together that are used to fill the gap of a missing tooth. The neighbouring teeth of the gap are carved and prepared to hold the bridge securely in place. The bridge is custom shaped to fit perfectly and be permanently fixed onto the healthy supporting teeth. Our caring and compassionate dentists will go through all procedure details with you and explain the benefits and side-effects of dental bridges. If dental bridges are the right restorative treatment for you, they will make sure that you’re happy with your dental restoration and that it feels natural and comfortable while speaking, eating and smiling.
