How to Prepare for Root Canal and Crown Therapy

August 4, 2023

Root canal and crown therapy is a major dental procedure that can help preserve a severely decayed or damaged tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected or diseased tissue from inside your tooth (the root canals) and replacing it with a synthetic material, then placing a protective cover (or crown) over the tooth. This type of dental treatment can be intimidating, but knowing what to expect and how to best prepare will help make it less overwhelming.

Before you go in for your root canal and crown therapy appointment, it’s important to understand why you need it and how it works, as well as learn some tips on how to properly prepare.

Why Do I Need Root Canal and Crown Therapy?

Your dentist may recommend this type of restorative dental treatment if you have an infection or other damage in the inner layer of your tooth, known as the pulp. Bacteria from decay or trauma to the tooth can cause an infection within the pulp. If left untreated, this infection can spread further into your jawbone and cause further damage to your teeth and gums. A root canal helps remove bacteria from inside your tooth so that these infections don’t become worse-thus preserving the health of your mouth.

What Is Involved in Root Canal and Crown Therapy?

The actual process requires several steps: numbing the area around the affected tooth; using a small drill or laser tool to open up the surface of the tooth; removing any damaged pulp; cleaning out any remaining bacteria; filling in with a permanent material such as gutta-percha; sealing off any exposed parts of the pulp chamber; and finally, affixing a customized crown or cap over the top of the treated area.

Preparing For Your Procedure

Most dentists recommend that patients take ibuprofen prior to their root canal procedure to minimize discomfort during and after their appointment. Additionally, warm salt-water rinses are often used before appointments in order to clear away bacteria buildup near where the dentist will be working. During your appointment, don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything that you don’t understand-your dentist should be more than willing to answer them!

When it comes time for fitting you with a custom crown after completion of your root canal treatment, you should know that most dentists require at least two weeks between beginning treatment on one side of your mouth before beginning on another side (this allows for proper healing). Furthermore, wearing temporary dentures is also advised during this time period until permanent restoration is completed.

Recovery From Root Canal Therapy

Typically there is little recovery time needed once you have undergone root canal therapy; however comfortable medication might still be taken if necessary during this post treatment period as well as anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by doctors if needed. Keep in mind that normal activities may return quickly but strenuous physical activities should still be avoided until full healing has occurred (which usually takes 2-3 weeks). Additionally It's important not forget regular brushing habits once full healing has been achieved in order ensure optimal long term oral hygiene maintenance going forward!

Hopefully understanding what needs preparation beforehand along with getting familiarized with what processes must occur during this type of therapeutic procedure itself will help alleviate some anxiousness surrounding getting ready for undergoing root canal & crown therapy treatments..
